Limousin is perhaps one of the most neglected regions in France. Little has change since the medieval times. However, this very characteristic makes Limousin a favorite getaway destination of tourists who wish to touch history, experience rural France, and traverse off-the-beaten path holiday places.

This relatively remote but refreshingly uncrowded region is showered with pasturelands. You would see Limousin cows loiter in the hills while sheep roam around the lower slopes of Cevennes. The rivers and lakes teem with varieties of fish.

The towns are under populated, giving a serene and quiet air about them. But just the same, they welcome visitors with some of the prettiest rural environments and architecture that France can offer.

The “chocolate box” villages in Corrèze are a must-see.

Collonges la Rouge is inundated with sandstone houses with red or blue roofs. The village is included in the Plus Beaux Villages de France, a list of the most interesting and outstanding village architecture in the country.

Autumn is possibly the best time to appreciate the countryside. The plateau Millevaches in the Creuse department goes aflame with colorful conifers, beech, birch, and chestnut trees that seem to own the land with their predominance. You barely see people, much less villages, in that area. This makes Millevaches the biggest attraction in Creuse.

As you get all peaceful and relaxed, pay a visit to some of Limousin’s century-old churches and cathedrals.
Take a brief walk along Rue de la Boucherie in Haute-Vienne and see two dark churches. St Michel de Lions looks immortal from the outside but wait until you see its interiors. Meanwhile, two startlingly beautiful 15th century stained-glass windows will render you speechless.

Moutier d’Ahun, notable for its romanesque and gothic architectural style, is also a promising site to visit. Guided tours are offered every afternoon.
