Rhône-Alpes: Charming its Way to Your Heart Quite literally at the crossroads of Europe, Rhône-Alpes boasts of impressive railway connections and encompassing motorway networks. It’s therefore a breeze to go backpacking to and from Paris, Switzerland, Italy, Britain, Spain, and even the Mediterranean. Hence, if backpacking is your cup of tea then make sure to include Rhône-Alpes in your next adventure itinerary!
One of the most interesting things to do in Rhône-Alpes is to visit Alps’ and Western Europe’s highest peak – Mont Blanc.
Near the mountain, the famous town of Chamonix could also be a nice place to see, since it holds the distinction of hosting the first ever Winter Olympics. You might want to ride the tram to the top of Aguille-de-Midi as it crosses over Charmonix. It’s a real sight to behold especially on clear days.
The Mont Blanc Massif is also a magnet for mountaineers, hikers, skiers, and snowboarders. It has the largest ski area in the world. However, if you want to avoid the crowd, there are more charming and serene alpine towns where you can also play your winter sports: Les Gets, Samoens, Morillon, St. Gervais, Albertville, and Morzine.
Apart from the Alps, Rhône-Alpes also offers more summer-friendly landscapes. In this region, vineyards, valleys, lakes, lavender fields, and olive groves abound.
In warmer months, you can try paragliding and hiking in the Cirque Du Fer-A-Cheval National Park. Three of France’s largest lakes can be found in this region, namely Lake Geneva, Lac du Bourget, and Lac d’Annecy. Canoeing is also a tempting option in one of these lakes.
Rhône-Alpes is also the second most important golfing region in France. It has over 60 beautiful golf courses for you to choose from.
Finally, if you’re a food and wine connoisseur, you’ll be lost at the wide range of local specialty restaurants available for your gastronomic satisfaction.
