Taking it Easy in the NetherlandsThe Netherlands, or Holland, is known for tulips, windmills and dairy products. It is also known as the most tolerant country in the world; certain issues that strike a moral nerve in most countries like same sex marriages, marijuana, and prostitution are legal in the Netherlands.
Fortunately the tolerant attitude of the country is not what draws visitors to the land of tulips. Hoge Veluwe National Park offers a smorgasbord of Mother Nature’s finest; virgin forests, wet marshlands and dry sand dunes. A unique feature of the country’s largest park is the museum. Visitors can borrow bikes from the park to help them make the most of their visit. Amsterdam is the nation’s capital. Much like Venice, the city canals are a romantic favorite. The city’s well preserved architectures and cobbled pathways infect visitors with old world charm. When the sun sets the canals amplify the city’s bright lights and Amsterdam transforms into one glamorous night spot after the other.
Before going home, visitors should treat themselves to a healthy serving of bitterballens, which are deep fried seasoned meatballs, and broodje haring, or herring filled sandwiches with extra onions and gherkins – all washed down with a chilled bottle of Heineken.
