Seeking to restore your mind and soul? Avoid the crowded tourist spots and visit Guarda. It is known as Portugal’s highest city as it rests northeast of the country’s biggest mountain, Serra da Estrela. Guarda stands out not because of its historic structures but because of its serenity and lovely congenial climate. It is mostly the discerning French people who have come to appreciate Guarda’s quiet charm and healing environment. Guarda’s climate has made it one of Europe’s favorite relaxation and health destinations.
Fragments of the town’s 12th century walls and few ancient town gates still remain in Guarda. The city is largely constructed in granite and a closer inspection is necessary to appreciate the fine details of the old aristocratic houses in the Rua de Dom Luis I and in the Cathedral square.
Better known as ‘Se da Guarda’, the Cathedral is the city’s most prominent tourist attraction. The cathedral stands like a fortress with its crenellated walls. The Cathedral is situated in the middle of the town, and like most structures in the city, is largely built of granite. Construction began in 1390 but it was only completed around the 16th century, thus the Cathedral has both Gothic and Manueline styles of architecture.
The impressive effect of its interior is created by the elegant use of lines and harmonious use of proportions for designing the cathedral’s three aisles. Also a main attraction in the Cathedral is the 16th century stone table of Joao de Ruao, on top of which a hundred figures, which depict the scenes of the life of Jesus Christ are displayed.
The visit to the cathedral will also not be complete without climbing the steps leading up to the cathedral’s roof terrace to better view its design and construction. Remember not to hurry down. Take a moment to just breathe deeply and relax. Immerse yourself in the magnificent view of the Serra da Estrela Mountain from the terrace and let nature and the quiet of Guarda restore your soul.
