Experience SlovakiaSlovakia is a non-coastal state bordered by five other states in Central Europe: Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine. There are no beaches in Slovakia but it does not mean the country is short on splendor. Mountain ranges, mysterious caves, quaint and interesting medieval structures and a host of resorts offering spa services and skiing keep the number of visitors increasing every year.
The Cachtice Castle is one of the more interesting landmarks of the country. Historians debunk the rumor of its former mistress, Countess Alzbeta Bathory, bathing in blood but confirm that she imprisoned and tormented around 600 women. Tourists can indulge in medieval gossip or enjoy the views of the hill where the castle sits. Bratislava is the nation’s capital. Known as a “light at the end of the tunnel†of some sort, the city marks the end of the Carpathian mountain range. The capital is relatively small and the best way to go around is by foot. The city has numerous churches, museums and government buildings that are must sees for architecture buffs. While going around grab a bite of bryndzove halusky, the country’s version of dumplings, and richman which is bread with cheese and meat filling.
