Nature’s Touch in Almeria The city of Almeria is the capital of a Spanish province with the same name. This city is located in Southeastern Spain. Its natural resources remain untouched despite a growing number of tourists. Almeria almost seems like an innocent child closely guarded by the mountain ranges of Sierra Nevada, Maria and the Cabrera.
Aside from tourism, agriculture is a large part of Almeria’s industry. Lemons and oranges are regularly harvested here. Almeria is most famous for is its white grapes. The city exports a huge bulk of this product. Its finest wines are made from these grapes.
Aside from Almeria’s landscape, the city is also peppered with interesting historical elements. During the Moorish rule in the Middle Ages, Almeria was the main seaport of the Kingdom of Granada. Today, Almeria’s main ports like Adra, Berja, Cuevas de Vera and Garrucha still stand.
If you’re visiting these ports, you should go to the lighthouse of Cabo de Gata and the Mermaids´ Reef. The Alcazaba is a worthy detour as well. This Moorish fortress is home to Castillo de San Cristobal. The castle’s ruins stand magnificently against the waves.
The beach bum in you may want to go to Mojacar, Salobrena and Vera. These towns offer a wide range of accommodations and resorts. While in Vera, don’t forget to visit the Plaza Mayor. The Church de la Encarnation can be traced back to the 1520s.
Western flicks were also filmed in Almeria because of its arid landscape. The desert of Tabernas served as a backdrop for the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia. Almeria’s natural volcanic park, the Cabo de-Gata Nijar is a worthy ecological spot.
A visit to Almeria lets you enjoy a breathtaking landscape, fine wine, and historical Moorish architecture. This city is a feast for the soul and the senses.
