Notes
:
Les Basses Roches is situated in the heart of rural Charente-Maritime, and you could quite easily spend your entire holiday relaxing in the secluded spacious garden and walled courtyard or cycling along the myriad of quiet lanes that surround the hamlet. The house is however situated just off the medieval pilgrim route of Santiago de Compostella. Consequently, the area is a world heritage site, and has an abundance of architectural and cultural treasures. Two of these treasures are right on the doorstep - the church of St. Pierre is one of the most outstanding examples of Romanesque architecture in the Charente, and there is also a beautiful renaissance chateau at Dampierre-sur-Boutonne. In easy cycling distance is Aulnay de Saintonge (3km) offering all amenities with restaurants, bars, an open-air pool, brocantes, a wine specialist, as well as a bustling Sunday market packed with delicious local produce. A little further away is St.Jean d’Angély with its café terraces nestling in timber-framed medieval boulevards, a host of excellent restaurants, and the Atlantis leisure park. And of course there are many brocantes and vineyards close by in which you can wile away your day.
